The Board chick of this month is from Orange County California, you know the series The Oc? Well that’s the place! Blair Buder (28) lives in Corona del Mar and has just finished her studies in physical therapy. Although she lives near the sea, she started surfing just five years ago. And just like any other board chick of the month on Style Spy, Blair was immediately hooked! Read on to get to know this boardchick of august!
Evey: For readers that don’t know you, when did you first get into surfing?
I first got into board sports with surfing. I picked it up later than most, I was 24, so I’ve been surfing for about 5 years now. I got totally addicted to it right away though!
Evey: Did you have any difficulties or fears when you started?
When I first started surfing, I didn’t think about being afraid so much, because it was all so new. I didn’t know what waves were good/bad, which were too big/small, or what the ocean was capable of. I have learned a lot since then!
I think the biggest thing I struggled with initially was learning how to have the patience necessary to be a surfer. It takes a very long time to learn how to surf, but fortunately I realized early on that the journey of learning how to surf is part of the joy of it. If it were easy, then it wouldn’t be so rewarding when you do make progress and catch fun waves!
It also took me a long time to learn how to surf because I first learned in Northern California, where the waves are big, choppy and rough, and freezing! Plus, I didn’t have anyone helping me or take any lessons, and my board was pretty small for a beginner (6’0”). But I just kept going out, and eventually got better and made friends that I still have to this day who helped me.
Evey: What do you love the most about surfing?
Oh, that’s a tough question! There are so many things that make up the magic that is surfing, that it is difficult to narrow it down to a few favorites…. That being said, I love the way that it has led me to so many wonderful people that are now some of my greatest friends. I also love the peace that it gives me from being out in the ocean and experiencing life through it. I also love the constant challenge that it provides, as there is always room for improvement, growth, and learning. Surfing has taught me a lot about myself and life in general, and I just feel so incredibly lucky to have it in my life. Surfing makes me happier than I know how to express, and now it is very much a part of who I am.
Evey: How often and where do you surf?
I surf Newport Beach every day, and I paddle out very early every morning. If my schedule permits, I love to go in the evening/afternoon too! I will also occasionally go down to surf Trestles in San Clemente, but I don’t go there as often as Newport because it is further away from where I live.
Evey: What’s your favorite location to surf? And what is your dream destination?
My favorite places to surf are Uppers at Trestles in San Clemente, Cardiff Reef in Cardiff, San Diego, and Scripps in La Jolla, San Diego. My dream destinations are anywhere with warm water! But really, I would love to go to Bali, Hawaii, and Australia. Those places just seem so amazing and fun to me, and I definitely plan on going there at some point for surf trips. I also someday soon want to go to Italy to surf with my wonderful friend Marta from Surfragette, and share some waves and fun times together.
Evey: Are you inspired by girl surfers rather than looking at guys?
I am inspired by both girls and guys! I love athletes that have a lot of style and seem to be having so much fun with surfing. My favorite surfers are Dane Reynolds, Craig Anderson, Kelia Moniz, Chippa Wilson, Kassia Meador, Alex Knost, Stephanie Gilmore, and Clay Marzo. They all rip, but each in a different way. I really admire surfers that have that special grace when they move on a wave, as if the board is just an extension of their body. It’s so amazing, inspiring, and beautiful to me to watch that kind of surfing.
Evey: What do you love to do besides surfing?
I also love to go running, read novels, eat candy, do crosswords, and bake tasty treats! My boyfriend and I also love to go exploring and find new surf shops and cafes together, and see music groups and art events all over Southern California.
Evey: Do you have any plans for this summer after finishing your internship?
So far nothing too exciting is planned yet, but I am finished with my internship at the beginning of August. After that, I plan to spend some time up near San Francisco to be with my family. Hopefully, my boyfriend and I will figure out a fun little trip to take at the end of the summer, before I have to get a job! But throughout the summer I definitely plan to get a lot of waves, enjoy the sun, and have a blast… And celebrate my birthday! hehe
Boardcheck: Do you have your own board?
Oh yeah! I have probably too many boards (I think I have 6 or so)! But I only really ride my 5’2” epoxy thruster that I had shaped for me. I love that board so much! I’m thinking about sometime in the future also getting a wood Paipo for beachbreak days, a longer single fin so that I can learn how to do footwork on a board, and maybe a 5’4” epoxy shortboard with some more volume to get more waves! Lol, I may be crazy…
Evey: Do you have any words for girls who want to start surfing? (i know there are a lot)
Yes! I think the biggest thing that anyone who wants to get into surfing needs to realize is that it takes a lot of time in the water and patience to learn how to surf. You have to go all the time, because not only are you learning the proper movements and coordination for catching waves, you’re also learning about the ocean, which definitely makes things more challenging. Also, I think a lot of girls might stay away from surfing because they are worried about looking silly or messing up in front of the guys, but you can’t care about that. Everyone looks like a kook when they first start, so just do your thing and don’t worry about who’s looking. Surfing is all about doing what makes you happy, so go and have a ton of fun with it!
Thank you so much Blair for your time, photos and great advice!
