How did you get into boardsports?
As a little girl I went with my mother windsurfing. I was sitting on the Board making circles. When I was old enough to travel alone, I practiced a few times in the Netherlands, and quickly went to Fuerteventura to learn everything.
What do you like the most about the board lifestyle?
The freedom, the feeling of being on the water. A day on the water is always the best day in my life. If I’m not in the water for a long time, I still get a little depressed. I also find it very nice to be with like-minded people to enjoy the good life (barbeque, a bit of water, next to the water, love of nature, enjoy sports).
How often and where do you practice?
If I’m not in the Netherlands, I practice every day in for example where I am at that moment, mostly in Corralejo (Fuerteventura) or Foz do Arelho at Lagoa de Obidos. In the Netherlands I go to Zeeland, the rest of the beautiful places to practice for me are just a bit too far away.
After what point did you feel that you were good enough?
When I had my own board and flew 2 meter through the air. And when I finished my powergybe. But actually I feel like I am going ‘towards a real windsurfer. I always see myself as the person who can get more out of a session and therefore I always try to achieve goals to be a real windsurfer.
Which locations whouldn´t we miss?
The north of Fuerteventura! I also think Bonaire (freestyle) but I must still go there! Further: do you jump waves, go to the north coast of Fuerteventura, Pozo (GC) or Guincho (POR). Want to do freestyle? Also Fuerteventura, Bonaire (I think) and Martinhal. For slalom they recommend the DEFI WIND race in France. That´s still on my bucket list.
Courage to follow your heart.
What advice would you give to yourself when you first started?
Go for it, do it! Do not wait. I waited for almost three years before I was really emigrated. Therefore, I often found myself whining on the plane and I missed the water every day. I should have moved earlier and be on the water.
